American League Game Summary - Boston at New York
(Sunday, June 29)
Final Score: Boston 8, New York 5
Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz belted a three-run homer, Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-3 with three RBI and the Boston Red Sox took the rubber match of a three-game set against the rival New York Yankees, 8-5, on Sunday.
The Red Sox finished up a tough road trip with a series win even though John Lackey (9-5) was reached for five runs -- four earned -- over five innings.
That's because Boston chased rookie starter Chase Whitley (3-2) early and got four scoreless innings from its bullpen, culminated in Koji Uehara pitching a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 18th save.
Whitley surrendered five runs on eight hits over four-plus innings for New York, which has dropped six of its last eight games.
Mark Teixeira and Carlos Beltran each hit solo homers in defeat.
Boston's Stephen Drew recorded just his second RBI of the season in the second inning as he followed up Mike Napoli's leadoff double with a single to right.
Ortiz's 450th career home run was a no-doubter, as he annihilated a Whitley offering deep into the seats in right-center in the third inning. Brock Holt walked and Pedroia singled ahead of the blast.
The Yankees began chipping away at the 4-0 deficit, as Derek Jeter singled in Ichiro Suzuki in the third frame, while Teixeira and Beltran took Lackey deep in the fourth.
Boston, though, extended its lead with three runs in the fifth.
Joe Girardi yanked Whitley after he walked the leadoff hitter, and the manager's first option out of the bullpen, Shawn Kelley, was even more ineffective. Kelley walked the first two batters he faced and gave up a two- run single to Pedroia before hitting the showers.
David Huff limited the damage to only one more run, and a Brett Gardner RBI double and a Jacoby Ellsbury run-scoring groundout in the fifth pulled the Yankees within 7-5.
After Pedroia tacked on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. threw out Beltran trying to score in the bottom half.
Boston went 4-6 on its road trip ... Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts made his MLB debut and singled in his second at-bat ... Beltran recorded three of New York's nine hits ... Bradley has nine outfield assists this season.
