Francesco Molinari is a three-time winner on the European Tour.
Turin, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) -
Francesco Molinari and Bernd Wiesberger fired matching 6-under 66s on Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Italian Open.
Molinari, who is looking to win his national title for the second time after emerging victorious at this event back in 2006, is a three-time winner on the European Tour and is one of three Italians within the top 10 through one round at Circolo Golf Torino.
Molinari is also looking to play his way into consideration for one of Paul McGinley's captain's pick on the European Ryder Cup team.
"I had a chat with Paul when he got here and I think the good thing is that he knows what I can bring to the team because he has seen me as vice-captain on the last two teams," Molinari said. "But it's up to me to prove that I really want it and am playing well enough. I think anything less than a win would not be enough so I have to aim for that."
