NCAA Game Summary - Marshall at Miami-Ohio

(Saturday, August 30)

Final Score: Marshall 42, Miami-Ohio 27

Oxford, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Rakeem Cato was responsible for four total touchdowns as the Marshall Thundering Herd defeated the Miami-Ohio RedHawks, 42-27, in the season opener at Yager Stadium.

Cato threw for three scores and also added a rushing touchdown, while throwing for 261 yards on 20-of-32 passing for Marshall (1-0). Devon Johnson scored twice and tallied 151 yards on 19 carries. Eric Frohnapfel brought in five passes for 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

For Miami-Ohio (0-1), Andrew Hendrix finished with 318 yards and three touchdowns through the air, but he was also intercepted once while completing 24-of-49 pass attempts. David Frazier recorded 109 yards on six catches and Rokeem Williams tacked on 99 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.

Cato got to work quickly, throwing two touchdown passes in the first quarter alone. The first was an 11-yard strike to Frohnapfel and the second was a three-yarder to Tommy Shuler.

The second quarter started on a similar note, with Cato throwing a one-yard touchdown pass to Frohnapfel.

Miami-Ohio finally got on the board itself with a 22-yard field goal midway through the second frame, but a two-yard rushing touchdown from Johnson gave the Thundering Herd a 28-3 edge at halftime.

The RedHawks cut into their deficit quickly once halftime ended. First, Hendrix threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Alex Welch, which was followed by a 24-yard field goal from Kaleb Patterson.

Later in the third the RedHawks got even closer following a three-yard touchdown pass from Hendrix to Dawan Scott.

Johnson put an end to the RedHawks' scoring streak and gave the Thundering Herd some breathing room with a 27-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

However, Miami-Ohio was not finished. Just over two minutes after Johnson's second rushing touchdown, Hendrix threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Williams.

In the end Marshall was able to prevail, thanks in part to a two-yard rushing touchdown from Cato with just over two minutes to play.

Miami-Ohio lost despite a 22-20 edge in first downs. Marshall held the RedHawks' rushing attack to 2.8 yards per carry.
