Green Bay, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Keifer Sykes tallied a game-high 19 points
as the Green Bay Phoenix captured a 67-53 win over the Crusaders of Valparaiso
in Horizon League play at the Resch Center.
Sykes, who shot only 4-of-13 from the floor, converted all but one of 12
chances at the free-throw line for the Phoenix (22-5, 12-2 HL) as they won
their third straight and the fifth in the last six outings. Jordan Fouse
produced a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Alec Brown
added 14 points and a staggering eight blocked shots.
With the victory the Phoenix earned at least a share of the regular season
title in the Horizon League, with games against Oakland and Detroit still left
in the schedule.
The Crusaders (16-12, 8-5) were led by Jubril Adekoya and Alec Peters with 11
points apiece as they had a two-game win streak come to an end.
Valpo led by a point with just under eight minutes remaining in the first
half, but the visitors shot only 36.7 percent from the floor as they fell
behind by three at the break, 30-27. Had Green Bay not shot only 1-of-6 behind
the 3-point line in the period, the margin could have been even greater.
The Crusaders again had trouble finding the basket in the second half,
converting just 35.7 percent, all while the Phoenix made good on 17-of-19 at
the free-throw line in the frame in order to claim the double-digit win at
Green Bay outscored the visitors at the charity stripe, 22-5, on the night.
