Dupree, Mercury edge Stars in OT
San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Candice Dupree had 20 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Phoenix Mercury to a 78-73 overtime victory over the San Antonio Stars on Thursday.
Penny Taylor supplied 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists and DeWanna Bonner scored 13 for the Mercury, who have won three straight and 19 of their last 20 games. Phoenix won despite going 1-of-16 from 3-point range.
Brittney Griner finished with 12 points and five blocks, setting the WNBA's single-season record for blocks at 117.
Jia Perkins scored a game-high 24 points off the bench and Danielle Adams contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds for San Antonio, which has dropped three in a row.
Phoenix led 34-29 at the half, but the Stars used a 10-2 run to take a 46-45 lead into the fourth.
Taylor scored eight points in a 10-0 burst, giving the Mercury a 59-55 advantage with 3:39 to play, but Perkins drained two 3-pointers with under two minutes to go, including a shot with 1.7 seconds left to send the game into overtime at 65-65.
Perkins' jumper tied the game at 70-70 with a minute left in the extra session, but Dupree hit a layup with 39.7 seconds left. Taylor then came up with a steal off a bad pass from Becky Hammon that led to Diana Taurasi's layup. Dupree and Taurasi each netted a pair of free throws around a Perkins trey to account for the final score.
