College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Chris Turner threw for 215 yards and a
pair of touchdowns to pace the Maryland Terrapins in a 24-21 win over the
Clemson Tigers in ACC action at Byrd Stadium.
Turner completed 19-of-26 pass attempts with no interceptions, as Maryland
(2-3, 1-0 ACC) snapped a two-game slide. Ronnie Tyler hauled in five passes
for 39 yards and a score, while Torrey Smith had three receptions for 64 yards
and a touchdown.
C.J. Spiller paced the Tigers (2-3, 1-2) with 72 rushing yards on 18 carries,
to go with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Jacoby Ford had five
receptions for 37 yards and he also added a score on the ground in the
The Tigers grabbed a 10-0 lead after the first quarter courtesy of a 41-yard
field goal by Richard Jackson and a 17-yard touchdown run by Ford.
The Terps responded early in the second quarter with a 43-yard field goal by
Clemson pushed its lead back to 10 with a 51-yard field goal by Jackson midway
through the period.
Maryland, however, came alive in the last five minutes of the quarter and
scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 17-13 lead to the intermission.
Turner first threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Smith before hooking up
with Tyler on a four-yard scoring strike with 35 seconds left. The two drives
accounted for 157 of the Terps' 221 total yards in the first half.
The Terps extended their lead late in the third quarter, as Davin Meggett
scored on one-yard run.
The Tigers countered immediately with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown
by Spiller. The ensuing two-point try was successful and Clemson trailed
On its final drive, Clemson moved the ball to the Maryland 28-yard line before
the Terps knocked the ball loose from quarterback Kyle Parker and recovered
the fumble to seal the victory.
Maryland limited Clemson to just 274 total yards, marking the fewest amount of
yards it has yielded in a game this season.
