National League Preview from The Sports Network

Friday, August 15 (All times Eastern)

Chicago Cubs (52-68) at New York Mets (57-65), 7:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Travis Wood (7-9, 4.86) New York - Zack Wheeler (7-8, 3.53)

(SportsNetwork.com) - At some point, the New York Mets will win a home game.

In fact, the Mets welcome the Chicago Cubs to Citi Field on Friday night for game one of a four-game series after achieving some franchise ignominy upon the exit of their last guest.

New York dropped a 4-1 decision to the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series on Thursday, which marked the 11th straight game the team has lost to Washington at home.

The Nationals outscored the Mets, 14-4, in the series and their 11th straight win is a New York franchise record.

"They've been a thorn in our side for the last two or three years for sure," manager Terry Collins said.

The Cubs, meanwhile, have won five of their last six meetings with New York, while limiting Mets hitters to a paltry .175 average with runners in scoring position. In a three-game sweep for Chicago in June at Wrigley Field, New York was 4-for-30 with runners in scoring position.

Right-hander Zack Wheeler goes for the Mets in the midst of a red-hot stretch in which offensive support hasn't been so much a concern.

He's 4-0 in his last eight starts while compiling a stingy 1.93 earned run average, pitching at least six innings in each outing.

He allowed three runs in six innings of his last start, but saw the bullpen allow four runs.

Against the Cubs on June 3, he threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed two hits, but the Mets lost the game, 2-1.

Lefty Travis Wood goes for Chicago and looks to stay unbeaten in his career against New York.

Wood is 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in five meetings with the Mets, and got a no- decision against them on June 5 after surrendering two runs in five innings.

He's winless in his last 10 starts, however, and is 0-4 with a 5.43 ERA since defeating Philadelphia on June 15. On the road, his ERA is 6.11 -- worst in the majors for a pitcher with the requisite number of innings.

Wood got a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Sunday after allowing an unearned run in six innings of a game the Cubs ultimately won. 3-2, in 12 innings.

On Thursday in Chicago, Scooter Gennett drove in two runs and Mike Fiers tossed six dominant innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cubs, 6-2, in the finale of a four-game set.

Chris Valaika hit a two-run single and Anthony Rizzo had two hits for the Cubs, who struck out a combined 16 times. Edwin Jackson (6-13) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 2/3 frames.

In New York, backed by two-run homers from Adam LaRoche and Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg fired seven sharp innings to lead the Nationals to a three- game series sweep.

Both Washington homers came against Dillon Gee (4-5), now winless in six straight starts after issuing four walks over six innings.
