(Friday, August 15)
Final Score: Houston 5, Boston 3 (10 innings)
Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Marisnick's two-run, ground-rule double
in the 10th inning was the deciding hit, as Houston edged Boston by a 5-3
count in the second edition of a four-game series from Fenway Park.
Craig Breslow (2-4) allowed singles to Gregorio Petit and Dexter Fowler to
begin the 10th, then plunked Jason Castro to load the bases. He retired
Jonathan Singleton on a fly to center before yielding to Junichi Tazawa.
Matt Dominguez popped out, but Marisnick muscled a pitch the other way which
dropped just in front of the right-field foul pole and bounced into the stands
to score two.
Tony Sipp (3-2) retired all four batters he faced to pick up the victory,
Houston's first ever in Boston after nine attempts dating back to 2003.
"Let's continue to try to accomplish the goal in which we set out to be, the
most improved team in baseball as far as the win-loss column goes," Astros
manager Bo Porter said.
Robbie Grossman finished with three hits, including a solo blast, and drove in
a pair of runs for the Astros, while Chris Carter and Fowler both added two
hits and Petit scored twice.
Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer and Brock Holt contributed a pair of hits
and knocked in the other run for the Red Sox, who saw their four-game winning
After David Ortiz reached on an infield hit to begin the home fourth, Cespedes
launched a ball over the Green Monster to make it 2-0.
Houston came back with a run in the fifth, as three straight two out singles,
the last from Grossman, plated Marisnick. Grossman's solo shot in the seventh
then knotted the score at 2-2.
In the home half, Christian Vazquez singled with two away, moved up on a wild
pitch and scored on Holt's hit to right. The inning came to a close when Holt
was thrown out trying to reach second, but the Sox led by a run.
"For us to lose that way after that go-ahead base hit, that was pretty
frustrating right there," said Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts.
Petit was inserted as a pinch runner for Carter, who led off the eighth with a
single. Fowler followed with a whit, and then Petit scored on a Matt Dominguez
dribbler to short. Fowler beat Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia to the
bag, then Petit faked out Vazquez and jumped over a tag by Burke Badenhop
before touching home with the palm of his hand to tie the score at 3-3.
