Final Score: Western Michigan 42, Central Michigan 31
Mount Pleasant, MI (Sports Network) - Tyler Van Tubbergen threw three fourth quarter touchdowns to lift the Western Michigan Broncos to a 42-31 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas in a Mid-American Conference shootout at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Tubbergen threw for four total touchdowns and also scored one on the ground for WMU (4-6, 2-4 MAC) which scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 23-14 deficit at the end of the third period. Tubbergen completed 23-of-33 pass attempts for 362 yards and was intercepted once. Eric Monette hauled in 11 of those passes for 196 yards and a touchdown. Both of Justin Collins' receptions resulted in touchdowns. Dareyon Chance rushed for 111 yards and a score for the Broncos which snapped a three-game losing streak.
Ryan Radcliff threw for 383 yards and a touchdown on 26-of-41 passing for CMU (3-6, 1-4) which has lost five of its last six. Titus Davis brought in 10 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. Zurlon Tipton led the Chippewas on the ground with 112 yards and two scores on 22 carries.
David Harman connected on a 37-yard field goal for Central Michigan to give the Chippewas a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Harman would add a 22-yard field goal later in the quarter as well.
Western Michigan jumped ahead, 7-6, early in the second quarter on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Van Tubbergen to Blake Hammond.
The Broncos struck again on their next drive with Van Tubbergen scoring on an 18-yard touchdown run.
Central Michigan found the end zone itself before halftime when Tipton scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
A 23-yard field goal from Harman pushed Central Michigan back in front, 16-14, midway through the third quarter.
Radcliff threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Titus Davis later in the period to extened the Chippewas' lead to 23-14.
Van Tubbergen threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a 28-yard strike to Justin Collins, early in the fourth quarter keeping the Broncos well within striking distance.
The junior quarterback pulled Western Michigan ahead with his third touchdown pass of the game, a 22-yard strike to Collins. The score ended a 98-yard drive and gave the Broncos a 28-23 lead with less than nine minutes to play.
That lead wouldn't stand for long as Tipton scored on a one-yard touchdown run for Central Michigan. The Chippewas were successful on a two-point conversion attempt making the score 31-28.
Yet again Van Tubbergen put Western Michigan on top with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Monette on the Broncos' next possession.
Courtney Williams fumbled on the ensuing kickoff return and the ball was recovered by Western Michigan. Three plays after the turnover Dareyon Chance scored on a 42-yard touchdown run that effectively put the game away.
In a game that featured more than 1,000 yards of total offense, WMU edged CMU in total yards by a 513-506 margin. The Broncos won despite having just a single possession in the red zone.
