Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Alex Neutz caught nine passes for 140 yards, including the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, as the Buffalo Bulls defeated the Western Michigan Broncos, 29-24, in Mid-American Conference action at UB Stadium.
It was Neutz's third 100-yard receiving game this season for the Bulls (3-7, 2-4 MAC), who have won back-to-back games. Joe Licata completed 21-of-33 passes for 285 yards and a touchdown, while Devin Campbell rushed the ball 22 times for 107 yards and a score.
For WMU (4-7, 2-5), Alex Carder completed 19-of-37 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, but he was done in by four interceptions. Carder was also the team's leading rusher with 52 yards. Justin Collins caught six balls for 122 yards, and Eric Monette (four receptions, 78 yards) caught two touchdowns.
Following an 18-yard touchdown run by Branden Oliver, Buffalo led 7-0 less than six minutes into the game.
The action remained quiet until early in the second quarter when the Bulls struck again. Following a three-and-out by WMU, Buffalo needed just one play to score as Campbell ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run. A 30-yard field goal off the foot of Patrick Clarke made it 17-0 in favor of Buffalo.
WMU finally scored with less than three minutes to play in the first half when Carder connected with Monette for a 17-yard touchdown pass.
The Broncos continued their comeback trail in the waning seconds of the first half with another Carder-to-Monette touchdown connection, this time for 27 yards, as they went into halftime down only three, 17-14.
Less than two minutes into the second half, WMU scored its third straight touchdown and took its first lead of the game following an eight-yard touchdown pass from Carder to Kendrick Roberts.
Buffalo closed out the third quarter with a pair of field goals by Clarke (35, 38) to retake the lead, 23-21.
WMU briefly got the lead back early in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard field goal from Andrew Haldeman, but the Bulls responded quickly with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Licata to Neutz. Following a failed two-point conversion attempt, the score remained 29-24 in favor of Buffalo.
Carder was intercepted twice and fumbled once down the stretch as Buffalo held on to win.
Buffalo was able to overcome 11 penalties by forcing five turnovers.
