San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - David Fales tossed four touchdown passes, including the game-winner in the final minute of regulation, as the San Jose State Spartans prevailed in a wild back-and-forth matchup with the San Diego State Aztecs, 38-34, in non-conference action at Qualcomm Stadium.
Fales finished 21-of-31 for 260 yards for San Jose State (3-1), which has won three straight since losing to nationally-ranked Stanford on Aug. 31. Ryan Otten caught five balls for 84 yards and a score, and De'Leon Eskridge had 52 yards rushing on 11 carries.
For SDSU (2-2), Adam Muema gained a career-high 202 yards rushing with a touchdown. Ryan Katz completed 17-of-27 passes for 213 yards with touchdown passes to Gavin Escobar and Colin Lockett. The Aztecs had won eight straight September home games prior to the loss.
The game got off to a slow start, with the only score of the first quarter coming on an Austin Lopez 43-yard field goal for the Spartans.
SDSU scored the game's first touchdown early in the second quarter on an 83- yard rush from Muema.
San Jose State answered with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Tyler Ervin to give it a 10-7 lead.
The Aztecs retook the lead midway through the second quarter following an eight-yard touchdown rush from Walter Kazee.
The sea-saw continued less than two minutes later, as the Spartans regained the advantage, 17-14, on a one-yard touchdown pass from Fales to Ina Liaina.
A Chance Martin 25-yard field for SDSU in the final minute of the first half tied the score up at 17-17.
The Aztecs capped off a 14-play, 90-yard drive in the third quarter with a three-yard touchdown pass from Katz to Escobar to give the home team a 24-17 advantage.
San Jose State tied the game up at 24-24 early in the fourth quarter after Fales completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Noel Grigsby. SDSU would retake the lead midway through the quarter on a 41-yard Marden field goal.
Fales answered for the Spartans, completing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Otten with 4:20 left in regulation to give his team a 31-27 advantage.
The Aztecs would not be outdone however, as Katz marched down the field for yet another score, hooking up with Lockett on a 39-yard touchdown pass, giving SDSU a 34-31 lead with less than three minutes to play.
With its backs against the wall, San Jose State needed just five plays to retaliate. Fales connected on a 14-yard touchdown strike to Chandler Jones with just under a minute remaining to go up, 38-34. SDSU got the ball back with one last chance to win the game but turned the ball over on downs.
SDSU lost despite controlling the ball for nearly 38 minutes and outgaining the Spartans, 484 to 367.
