NCAA Game Summary - Duke at Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - J.C. Coleman rushed for 183 yards and two
touchdowns as the Virginia Tech Hokies overcame a slow start to defeat the Duke
Blue Devils, 41-20, in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest at Lane/Worsham
Logan Thomas completed 14-of-23 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns while
under center for Virginia Tech (4-3, 2-1 ACC). Thomas also threw an
interception and was sacked three times. Marcus Davis set a new-career high
with 144 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions. James Gayle led Virginia
Tech's defense with nine total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.
For Duke (5-2, 2-1), Sean Renfree completed 20-of-33 attempts for 235 yards and
a touchdown. He was also intercepted once and was sacked a total of five times.
Jamison Crowder pulled in a team-high eight receptions for 127 yards and a
score while Conner Vernon made four catches for 70 yards. The Blue Devils were
limited to just 329 yards of total offense in the contest.
Duke had complete control of the contest in the early going. Renfree put the
Blue Devils ahead by completing a 62-yard touchdown pass to Crowder at the
12:16 mark of the first quarter. Ross Martin kicked in a pair of field goals to
make it 13-0. The Blue Devils' defense made its mark as Jordan Byas returned an
interception 20 yards for six to make it 20-0 in the opening period.
Virginia Tech ended the run with a four-yard touchdown run by Martin Scales.
The Hokies inched closer near the end of the first half. Cody Journell
connected in a 37-yard field goal. Then with just 19 seconds left in the second
quarter, Thomas completed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Davis. Hournell's
extra point sent Virginia Tech into halftime trailing, 20-17.
Virginia Tech ran away with the game in the second half. The Hokies took their
first lead of the game after the break as Coleman produced a 45-yard touchdown
run to put his team up, 24-20, at the 13:03 mark of the third quarter.
Thomas connected with Davis for a 47-yard touchdown pass with just under seven
minutes left in the third frame. Davis's second touchdown catch made it 31-20.
Journell made a 41-yard field goal to send the game into the fourth quarter
with Virginia Tech again, 34-20.
The Hokies added some insurance in the final period as Coleman sprinted 86
yards into the end zone for the game's last touchdown.
Duke was unable to produce anything on the ground and finished with a season-
low 22 rushing yards.
