Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Behind 461 team rushing yards, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets blew out the Virginia Cavaliers, 56-20, in ACC action at Dodd Stadium.
Orwin Smith led Georgia Tech (2-1, 1-1 ACC) in rushing with 137 yards and a touchdown on just six carries. Tevin Washington completed 6-of-8 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown and ran for 93 yards and three scores. Vad Lee added 59 yards and found the end zone twice on the ground.
For Virginia (2-1, 0-1), Michael Rocco started the game and completed 15-of-25 passes for 143 yards, tossing a touchdown and two interceptions. He was spelled for Phillip Sims late, who went 6-of-8 for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
The Yellow Jackets struck first at the 13:25 mark of the first quarter on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Washington to Zach Laskey.
Georgia Tech's lead extended to 14-0 on another big play just three minutes later. This time it was Smith ripping off a 77-yard touchdown run.
Virginia got on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter, cutting its deficit in half following a 19-yard touchdown pass from Rocco to Jake McGee.
At the 2:56 mark of the first quarter, Washington added a one-yard rushing touchdown to put the Yellow Jackets up, 21-7. A 60-yard run from Washington earlier in the drive helped set up the short score.
Lee added a one-yard touchdown run early the second quarter to give Georgia Tech a three touchdown lead.
The Yellow Jackets' lead ballooned to 35-7 just before the half when Washington ran in another one-yard score.
It was much of the same after intermission, with Washington running in a 12- yard score to further pad Georgia Tech's advantage. Another touchdown - A 32- yarder from Matt Connors early in the fourth quarter - gave Georgia Tech a 49-7 lead.
The Cavaliers finally got back on the scoreboard with 9:15 left in the game when Sims completed a 22-yard touchdown strike to E.J. Scott, but Georgia Tech answered with another Lee score later in the quarter.
Virginia added a score in the game's waning seconds when Sims connected on a one-yard touchdown pass to Zachary Swanson.
The Yellow Jackets scored touchdowns on all four of their red zone drives.
