Final Score: Nebraska 42, Arkansas State 13
Lincoln, NE (Sports Network) - Taylor Martinez threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, as the Nebraska Cornhuskers claimed a 42-13 win over Arkansas State in a non-conference bout at Memorial Stadium.
Martinez completed 13-of-14 passes and averaged 4.9 yards on 11 carries for the Cornhuskers (2-1), who had dropped out of the Top-25 following last week's loss at UCLA. Ameer Abdullah had a big day on the ground, carrying 30 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Kenny Bell caught three passes for 71 yards, two of which went for touchdowns.
Head coach Bo Pelini left the field in an ambulance at halftime. He issued a statement following the game saying that medical personnel ran some precautionary tests and everything checked fine. He plans to be back at work on Sunday.
Ryan Aplin was held to 138 yards on 16-of-30 passing for the Red Wolves (1-2).
Abdullah got the Cornhuskers on the board first with a one-yard touchdown plunge at the 9:55 mark of the opening quarter.
Later in the first quarter, Martinez made it a 14-0 game with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Bell.
The Red Wolves' only points of the first half came on a 31-yard field goal by Brian Davis at the 13-minute mark of the second quarter.
Nebraska tacked on two more scores before intermission. Martinez and Bell hooked up for their second touchdown of the day, this time on a 25-yard strike with 9:29 to play until the half. Abdullah then added his second rushing score of the day on a two-yard scamper in the final minute of the second quarter.
The Red Wolves' defense came up with a big play early in the third quarter, when Shervarius Jackson dropped Martinez for a 14-yard sack and jarred the ball loose. ASU's Qushaun Lee recovered it in the end zone to cut the deficit to 28-10. Davis added a 32-yard field goal later in the same frame to make it a 28-13 game. However, the visitors would draw no closer the rest of the way.
Nebraska's Imani Cross scored on a two-yard run with 12:50 remaining to push the lead to 35-13. Three minutes later, Martinez broke loose for an 18-yard touchdown run to erase any doubt.
The Huskers' ground game was in top form, churning out 347 yards (5.9 ypc) and four TDs on the day.
