Final Score: Texas 56, Baylor 50
Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Joe Bergeron ran for 117 yards and five touchdowns as he helped give the Texas Longhorns a 56-50 win over the Baylor Bears in Big 12 Conference play at Texas Memorial Stadium.
Bergeron carried the ball 19 times for the Longhorns (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) as they rolled up 251 yards and a total of seven touchdowns on the ground as they snapped a brief two-game slide. David Ash hit on 19-of-31 passes attempts for another 274 yards and a score as well for the hosts.
The Bears (3-3, 0-3), losers of three straight, were paced by Nick Florence who not only threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns, he also ran 11 times for 69 yards and two more scores in the losing cause.
Texas wasted little time putting pressure on the visitors as Daje Johnson took the first snap from scrimmage and raced 84 yards to the end zone to give Texas an early 7-0 lead.
Florence and the Bears showed off their quick-strike offense as well just minutes later the signal-caller found the end zone on an eight-yard run to knot the score at 7-7.
Putting together a lengthy nine-play, 72-yard drive, the Longhorns rode Bergeron over the goal line on a 15-yard run with just under seven minutes to play in the period to five the hosts the lead once more.
Baylor then scored a pair of touchdowns in less than two minutes as Glasco Martin hit the end zone on a two-yard run and Florence hooked up with Terrance Williams on an 80-yard scoring strike to make the score 21-14 after one period of play.
Bergeron scored the first of three touchdowns in the second quarter on a two- yard effort to again lock the teams on the scoreboard, but barely two minutes later the Bears were again on the attack and celebrated a seven-yard TD pass from Florence to Lanear Sampson.
Texas went back on the offensive, ripping off three straight rushing touchdowns, two by Bergeron that measured nine and four yards. In between, Johnathan Gray accounted for a 25-yard TD run which made the score 42-28 in favor of the Longhorns.
Before the break the Bears were able to added a 29-yard field goal by Aaron Jones to again cut into the deficit and leave Texas with an 11-point edge at the break.
Jones knocked through field goals of 42 and 44 yards in the third stanza and the Bears also scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone, although a two- point conversion attempt failed.
Between the two successful Jones field goals, Bergeron scored on an eight yard run which meant Texas was able to put up a 49-43 advantage heading into the fourth.
Ash guided the Longhorns into the end zone once more at the 12:16 mark of the fourth as he combined with Mike Davis on a 15-yard TD pass play to boost the lead to 56-43.
Baylor still had plenty of time to catch up and in fact made the score 56-50 when Florence crossed the goal line from one yard out with 1:57 to play, but after that the Longhorns ran out the clock.
The Bears managed to generate 607 yards of total offense in the meeting, but at the same time the squad was just 3-of-12 on third down. Baylor came into the week ranked last in the entire nation in total defense, permitting 558.8 ypg and tonight the squad allowed 525 yards to the Longhorns.
