Boise, ID (Sports Network) - D.J. Harper rushed for 162 yards and scored four total touchdowns to lead Boise State to a 39-12 victory over the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in a non-conference matchup at Bronco Stadium.
Joe Southwick completed 21-of-31 passing attempts for 304 yards and two scores for Boise State (1-1) with an interception. Matt Miller grabbed a game-high seven receptions for 71 yards. The Broncos entered the contest unranked for the first time since Sept. 14, 2008. Demarcus Lawrence led the way for Boise State's defense with seven tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Zac Dysert paced Miami (1-2) by completing 20-of-27 passes for 176 yards. The RedHawks rushing game averaged just 2.1 yards per game as Jamire Westbrook and Spencer Treadwell were contained by the Broncos' defense. David Frazier led Miami's receivers with 63 yards on three catches while Andy Cruse complied 42 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. Pat Hinkel made some big plays defensively, as he recovered a fumble and intercepted Southwick in the end zone.
Boise State opened up the scoring as Southwick passed over the defense to hit Harper in stride for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Boise elected to go for two, and Harper took a direct snap past the goal line to give the Broncos an early 8-0 lead.
Miami quieted the crowd in the second quarter. Kaleb Patterson put the RedHawks on the board with a 45-yard field goal a minute into the second frame. Later, after a fumble gave Miami the ball inside BSU's 10-yard line, Treadwell completed a halfback pass to Cruse for a two-yard score. The RedHawks failed a two-point conversion when trying to build a field goal lead, which left them ahead, 9-8, with 4:39 left in the first half.
The Broncos answered with a six play, 75-yard drive which was punctuated by a 1-yard touchdown rush by Harper. The second touchdown of the day by the tailback gave Boise State a 15-9 lead heading into the intermission.
Boise State began to pull away after the break. It made its lead 22-9 when Harper rushed 14 yards for his third score of the game with 10:41 left in the third period.
Later in the quarter, Harper achieved his fourth touchdown of the day with a 43-yard dash to the end zone. Joe Southwick threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this one for 11 yards to Chris Potter, with 2:18 left in the third quarter to make it 36-9.
The RedHawks ended Boise State's run in the opening minute of the fourth frame, as Patterson drilled a 42-yard field goal to make it 36-12.
The Broncos ended scoring with 3:36 left to play as Michael Frisina's 26-yard field goal made it final.
Boise State gained 33 first downs, while Miami managed just nine.
