Ray, Steele lead Argonauts in rout of Roughriders
Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Ricky Ray passed for 407 yards and three touchdowns and Curtis Steele rushed for a pair of scores as the Toronto Argonauts rolled to a 48-15 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday.
Chad Owens had 11 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown in the win and Antwaun Molden had two interceptions, returning one in the fourth quarter 108 yards for a touchdown for the final margin.
The Argonauts (1-1), who were coming off a 45-21 loss at Winnipeg on June 26, scored more points against Saskatchewan than they did in any of their 18 games last season.
Toronto coach Scott Milanovich said his players wanted to "show up" after being blown out in their season opener.
"Pro athletes have pride and I think last week left a bad taste in their mouths," he said.
Ray was 29-of-37 without an interception while Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant went 17-for-29 for 295 yards, two touchdowns and two picks under a lot of pressure.
The reigning Grey Cup-champion Roughriders (1-1) opened their season with a 31-10 win over Hamilton last Sunday in a rematch of last season's title game.
Saskatchewan coach Corey Chamblin said his team didn't practice well during the week, but he was surprised by the blowout.
"You have to be perfect against a team like Toronto," he said. "We didn't think the game would turn out like this. Some weeks you have bad practices and you play a good game, and other weeks you have good practices and play a bad game."
The Argos had a 17-1 lead at halftime but were prepared for the Roughriders to make a run.
"That's just the way the CFL is," said Milanovich.
The run came, as Durant threw touchdown passes to Taj Smith and Anthony Allen in the third quarter to help the Riders pull within 25-15. But Toronto scored 23 unanswered points in the fourth to pull away.
The run was capped by Molden's 108-yard interception return for a touchdown -- the second-longest in Argos history behind Eric Harris' 115-yard run back vs. Montreal on Sept. 6, 1977.
Toronto's Andre Durie had five catches for 77 yards but appeared to injure his right shoulder as he was tackled early in the fourth quarter ... Jason Barnes and Mike Bradwell had touchdown catches for the Argos and Swayze Waters kicked two field goals ... Harris died in 2012.
