CFL, union ratify 5-year CBA deal

Toronto, ON ( - The Canadian Football League and CFL players union have ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement, avoiding a work stoppage with the start of the regular season just two weeks away.

Among other things, the new CBA raises the salary cap, increases minimum pay and pension contributions and changes the way the league classifies players based on their citizenship.

The deal was ratified Friday after a tentative agreement was reached June 8 following two weeks of discussions. The old CBA expired at midnight EDT on May 29.

"This agreement provides stability for our teams at the same time it improves pay, health and safety, and mobility for players," CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon said in a statement.

The new CBA will run either through May 15, 2019 or the first day of training camp that season, whichever arrives later.

It includes measures aimed at improving player health and safety, including a limit of one contact practice per day during training camp and one per week in the regular season.

The salary cap was raised from $4.4 million -- now the new minimum -- to $5 million and will increase $50,000 per year to a total of $5.2 million in 2018.

An increase in the cap will be renegotiated if the aggregate revenues of the league's nine teams increases by more than $27 million in any year during the agreement.

Players -- formerly categorized as either non-import (Canadian) or import -- will now be classified as nationals and internationals, and there was a change to how that is decided.

Among the other changes in the new CBA:

- The league's minimum salary was increased $5,000 to $50,000 and will be raised $1,000 per year under the agreement.

- Active rosters were expanded from 42 to 44 players, with a two-player decrease to the reserve roster from four to two.

- Pension contributions were increased.

- The nine-game injury list was eliminated in favor of a six-game list.

- Practice rosters were expanded from seven to 10 players per team and will be increased from 12 to 15 players in the fall.
