GAME NOTES: Members of the Big 12 Conference will meet to decide third place in the Old Spice Classic on Sunday afternoon, as the West Virginia Mountaineers go up against the Oklahoma Sooners.

A team in transition under head coach Bob Huggins, West Virginia has just one win in its first three outings, an 87-44 victory over Marist in an earlier round of this event. On Friday, the team was taken down by the Davidson Wildcats, 63-60.

For the Sooners, the 2012-13 campaign began with three straight wins over ULM, UT-Arlington and Texas-El Paso, but the squad's luck ran out two days ago when it was thumped by 17th-ranked Gonzaga in a 72-47 final in this event.

As far as the all-time series is concerned, each school has one win over the other, the most recent clash coming in 2007 just after Christmas when the Sooners captured an 88-82 victory after a pair of overtime periods.

Today's game marks just the second time in Big 12 history that a pair of member schools will meet during a regular-season non-conference affair, the first time it happened was in the first year of the league (1996) between Texas and Nebraska. The teams will meet two more times during this regular season, next in Morgantown on Jan. 5 and then two months later on Oklahoma's home floor.

A cold streak by the Mountaineers at the end of the first half and the start of the second buried the team to the point where they couldn't fully recover against Davidson on Friday. During that stretch the team made good on just 1- of-16 from the floor, allowing Davidson to eventually build an 11-point advantage in the second half. Deniz Kilicli recorded a double-double for WVU with his 10 points and game-high 11 rebounds, but he also turned the ball over six times. Juwan Staten accounted for a team-best 15 points and four steals, followed by Gary Browne with 11 points off the bench in the setback as the team shot a mere 8-of-17 at the free-throw line and 4-of-13 beyond the arc. For the first three games of the campaign, the Mountaineers are hitting three- point tries at a 25.0 percent clip, their free-throws at only 62.5 percent, which means they are leaving far too many points at the charity stripe. Aaric Murray leads the group in scoring with 10.0 ppg, but he tallied just six against Davidson before fouling out.

Oklahoma's offense hit a wall against the Bulldogs two days ago, the team shooting only 7-of-27 from the floor in the first half, including 2-of-9 behind the three-point line, en route to the lopsided 25-point setback. The team ended up shooting just 32.0 percent from the floor overall, which was only slightly better than their 31.3 percent effort out on the perimeter. Romero Osby was the top scorer for the Sooners with his 13 points, accounting for more than half of those at the charity stripe where he missed only one of his eight chances. Isaiah Cousin contributed 10 points thanks to 3-of-5 beyond the arc. Oklahoma was easily handled on the glass, 51-24, and came up with a mere five offensive rebounds. Despite the lopsided outcome on the glass versus the Bulldogs, the Sooners are still leading the opposition in that department overall on the season by two per game. Osby paces the group in scoring with 12.0 ppg and is also tops with eight rebounds per contest, while Steven Pledger is responsible for 10.8 ppg thanks to his 11-of-27 (.407) effort on the perimeter.

Inconsistent play has doomed the Mountaineers twice already this season and chances are it will happen again today as the team attempts to get out of Florida on a positive note.
