Hope Solo arrested on assault charges

Kirkland, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hope Solo, longtime goaltender for the U.S. women's national soccer team and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was arrested early Saturday after police said she assaulted her sister and 17-year-old nephew.

Solo was jailed on two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault, the Kirkland Police Department said in a news release. She will have a mandatory court appearance on Monday.

Police said they responded just before 1 a.m. to a 911 call of a disturbance in which a man said a woman was "hitting people" and they couldn't get her to stop or leave the house.

Officers who responded said they found Solo "intoxicated and upset" and observed "visible injuries" on her nephew and sister. The officers got witness statements and determined Solo was "the primary aggressor and had instigated the assault."

Jail records show Solo was booked at the south King County detention facility at 4:10 a.m. The time of her court date Monday has yet to be determined.

Solo, 32, plays for the Seattle Reign in the National Women's Soccer League. She won Olympic gold medals as the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. women's team in 2008 and 2012.

Both teams said Saturday they were aware of the situation involving Solo.

The U.S. team, ranked No. 1 in the world, played to a 2-2 draw against France in its most recent game on Thursday in Hartford, Connecticut. The team said Solo was unavailable for the game due to a family commitment.

Ashlyn Harris made her first appearance of the year in net and third of her career for the U.S. team.
