Silva's hat trick takes United to top of East

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Luis Silva scored his first goal of the season in the sixth minute for D.C. United on Wednesday, then he scored twice more in the first half to lead his side to a 4-2 win over the Montreal Impact at the Saputo Stadium.

Silva failed to register a goal in his first nine games this term, but broke out in a big way with a first-half hat trick on Wednesday that carries United to the top of the Eastern Conference, two points clear of second-place New England.

Following Silva's sixth-minute opener, Montreal took a 2-1 lead behind goals from Jack McInerney and Andres Romero before Nick DeLeon leveled the match at 2-2 in the 23rd.

Silva then scored again to make it 3-2 before he added a third goal in first- half stoppage time, this time scoring from the penalty spot.

Fabian Espindola recorded two assists for United, setting up Silva's first tally and then delivering a cross to DeLeon in the 23rd after Montreal had leveled the match.

Patrice Bernier nearly put the Impact ahead in the 37th minute when his free kick struck the crossbar, but the visitors came right back and took the lead two minutes later with Silva scoring a fine individual goal by curling a shot from outside the area past goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

United's Steve Birnbaum then drew a foul on Montreal's Hassoun Camara just before the halftime whistle, allowing Silva to fire home his third goal of the evening from 12 yards.

After a six-goal first half, things settled down a bit after the break, but Bernier squandered a chance to get his team back in the game in the 76th minute when his penalty kick struck the post after United's Davy Arnaud handled the ball inside his penalty area.
