Union part ways with Hackworth

Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union announced Tuesday that the club has parted ways with head coach John Hackworth.

Hackworth posted a 23-30-20 record in MLS play since taking over for Peter Nowak on June 13, 2012. He led the Union to a club-best 12 wins in 2013, but a run of just three wins in the club's first 16 games of the 2014 season was deemed unacceptable by Philadelphia Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz.

"We are a very ambitious club and although we are just in our fifth season we expect to win and be in the top tier of MLS," Sakiewicz said in a club statement. "Today we will begin a serious global search for a team manager who will help guide us to our goal of competing to win the MLS Cup. Philadelphia is a major market and we expect that there will be significant interest from a wide variety of qualified candidates to become Philadelphia Union's team manager."

Jim Curtain, a former MLS player who served as an assistant coach under Hackworth, will be the Union's head coach on an interim basis.
