NHL Game Summary - Calgary at NY Rangers
(Sunday, December 15th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 4, Calgary 3 (SO)
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Benoit Pouliot recorded the winner in the seventh round of the shootout, as the New York Rangers put an end to a pair of losing streaks by edging Calgary, 4-3, at Madison Square Garden.
Pouliot began the deciding round by using several stick fakes to pull Karri Ramo out of position, and, as he slid to the left post, directed the puck inside the right pipe.
"I just went in and I knew I was going to do that. I just had to get the goalie to move with me and then let the arm do the rest," said Pouliot.
Henrik Lundqvist sealed the win by stopping Mikael Backlund.
Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan and Carl Hagelin scored in regulation for the Rangers, who had dropped all four of its home dates on a season-high nine-game residency and had lost five straight in Manhattan.
Lundqvist picked up the victory thanks to 18 stops.
Backlund, Curtis Glencross and Sean Monahan lit the lamp for the Flames, who had won two in a row, both beyond regulation, prior to Sunday's setback.
Ramo made 29 saves in defeat.
Backlund opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 7:28 of the first, then Glencross doubled the edge at the 15-minute mark.
"Hudler helped me out in the faceoff and then Russ made a good heads up play to find my stick in front of the net," Backlund said.
Stepan's wrister from the right side put the Rangers on the board only 25 seconds later, and Hagelin's persistence tied the contest just shy of the 7 1/2-minute mark of the second.
Monahan chipped a shot over Lundqvist and Calgary went up 3-2 with 4:44 played in the third period, then Kreider answered inside of eight minutes remaining.
The Rangers were given 1:20 of 5-on-3 time with 3:16 to play after Mike Cammalleri and Ramo were whistled for infractions 40 seconds apart, but failed to produce a lead goal.
Kreider was given a double-minor for high sticking with one second left on the two-man edge and the Flames managed to get the game to an extra session.
New York's homestand continues on Wednesday against the Metropolitan Division leading Penguins ... Calgary heads to Boston on Tuesday ... The Rangers have won eight of 12 games at MSG against the Flames since 1995.
