NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Anaheim
(Sunday, January 12th)
Final Score: Anaheim 1, Detroit 0
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonas Hiller won his club-record 14th straight start thanks to a 22-save shutout, as the Anaheim Ducks earned their seventh consecutive victory with a 1-0 decision over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday at Honda Center.
Andrew Cogliano netted the game's only goal in the second period as the Ducks notched their 17th win in their last 18 games while improving to 19-0-2 at home this season.
Hiller has been a key component of the Ducks' recent dominance, as the 31- year-old netminder became just the fifth goaltender to win 14 straight and the first since Pittsburgh's Tom Barrasso in 1992-93.
"He's the reason for this little streak," Cogliano said of Hiller. "He's been playing really well."
Petr Mrazek played admirably in defeat, stopping 22-of-23 shots for the Red Wings, who have lost four of their last six games.
"They're finding a way to win every night and we're not finding a way to win every night," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said. "We would like to be more like them to be honest with you."
Cogliano supplied Hiller with the only support he needed at 12:42 of the middle stanza when he cut to the net and tipped in a centering feed from Saku Koivu to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Detroit had a prime opportunity to find the equalizer after Anaheim's Teemu Selanne went off for tripping at 16:20 of the third, but Hiller stood tall between the pipes down the stretch to secure his third shutout of the season.
The Red Wings outshot the Ducks, 10-6, in the first, but failed to get anything past Hiller as the teams went into the first intermission in a scoreless deadlock.
Hiller has 19 career shutouts ... The Ducks had scored four-or-more goals in a franchise record six straight games coming into the tilt ... Detroit finished 0-for-5 on the power play ... Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf missed the game with a lower-body injury.
