American League Game Summary - Detroit at Chicago

(Wednesday, June 11)

Final Score: Chicago 8, Detroit 2

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Conor Gillaspie's two-run double highlighted a big sixth inning for Chicago as the White Sox grabbed an 8-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the second of a rain-shortened three-game set.

Gordon Beckham had a two-run single in the inning, and Jose Abreu hit a home run earlier in the game and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the White Sox, who have won the first two games of this series.

"We show up to play and we don't expect everything," said Beckham. "We don't expect to win the division tomorrow, but we just want to do our thing and we're getting some wins right now."

John Danks (5-5) gave up two runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings to win his second straight start.

Rajai Davis and Torii Hunter each drove in a run for the Tigers, who have lost three straight and eight of their last 10.

Justin Verlander (6-6) was tagged for seven runs on eight hits in just 5 2/3 innings to lose his second straight start.

"There's nothing in particular that concerns me with Justin that I can tell you, but we've got to find a way to fix him," said Detroit manager Brad Ausmus.

Tuesday's game had been rained out, with no make-up date yet announced. Both starters on Wednesday were scheduled to pitch Tuesday's game.

The game was tied in the sixth inning when the White Sox exploded for seven runs.

It appeared the Tigers were going to get away with little damage as the team turned a double play on a Dayan Viciedo ground ball after the first three batters reached base with singles. The double play scored a run, but Alejandro De Aza followed with a single to plate another run.

The next two batters walked, and Beckham singled in two more to bring out Ian Krol in relief of Verlander.

Gillaspie greeted Krol with a double to score two more runs, and he came home on an Adam Dunn single for an 8-1 lead.

Detroit got a run back in the seventh on a Davis double that plated Eugenio Suarez.

Abreu's leadoff homer in the second got the White Sox on the board, but the Tigers tied the game in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout from Hunter.

Game Notes

Each team has won four games in the series this season ... Verlander fell to 5-8 in 16 career starts at U.S. Cellular Field ... Danks moved to 6-10 in his career against the Tigers ...
