American League Game Summary - Detroit at Oakland
(Monday, May 26th)
Final Score: Oakland 10, Detroit 0
Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tommy Milone struck out six over 6 2/3 innings and the Oakland Athletics smashed five home runs en route to a 10-0 triumph over the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a four-game set Monday at O.co Coliseum.
Brandon Moss and Kyle Blanks both smacked solo shots in the second inning before Josh Donaldson and Yoenis Cespedes belted back-to-back blasts in the third to provide more than enough support for Milone (3-3), who scattered four hits and two walks over his scoreless outing.
Derek Norris capped Oakland's home run barrage with a grand slam in the eighth, while Donaldson finished 3-for-5 with two RBI to help the A's snap their four-game losing streak.
"It was a great day for us after a tough series in Toronto," Norris said. "We played hard. We battled. It was nice to come out here and put up some runs."
Drew Smyly (2-3) surrendered six runs on eight hits in just five innings to absorb the loss. Victor Martinez collected two of the Tigers' five hits in the setback, their third in a row and seventh in their last eight games.
"We wanted to turn it around three days ago but it just hasn't happened," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said of his team's recent slide. "Something has to happen, something has to click. We have to have a good outing from our starter and all of a sudden everything's back to normal."
Oakland left runners on the corners in the first inning, but Moss opened the second with a drive to center. Detroit center fielder Austin Jackson jumped at the wall and had the ball in his glove briefly, but he couldn't bring it back, as the ball slipped out of his glove and over the wall for a home run.
Two batters later, Blanks launched a 2-1 changeup deep to left-center field for his first home run with Oakland. The A's acquired Blanks from the San Diego Padres on May 15.
With one out in the third, Donaldson scorched a line-drive shot that just cleared the wall down the left-field line before Cespedes followed by golfing a 3-2 slider down the left-field line to give the A's a 4-0 lead.
Oakland tacked on two more runs in the fourth, as Alberto Callaspo and Blanks both singled before Craig Gentry walked to load the bases with no outs.
Callaspo scored on a Coco Crisp sacrifice fly and Donaldson singled two batters later to plate Blanks for a 6-0 advantage.
Milone, meanwhile, did not allow a runner to move past second over his solid outing, working around a one-out double from Andrew Romine in the third and a leadoff double from Miguel Cabrera in the fourth.
Norris clubbed his first career grand slam in the eighth to account for the final margin. Blanks started the inning with a walk, Gentry reached on catcher interference and Crisp reached on a fielding error before Norris crushed a Phil Coke fastball deep to left-center field for a 10-0 lead.
The shutout was Oakland's seventh of the season ... Oakland traded minor- league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named later in exchange for Blanks ... Detroit has been outscored 34-6 during its three-game slide ... The Tigers finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight ... Milone improved to 3-0 with a 1.03 ERA over his last four starts ... Moss has 18 extra-base hits in May, tying him with Jason Giambi (2001) for the Oakland record for extra-base hits in the month of May.
