Final Score: Baltimore 14, New York 5
Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Delmon Young homered and drove in three runs to lead the Baltimore Orioles over the New York Yankees, 14-5, at Yankee Stadium.
Young finished 3-for-6 and also scored two runs for the Orioles, who have split the first two games of this three-game set. Adam Jones added a two-run homer, ending 2-for-4 with two runs scored, as Baltimore's offense exploded in winning for just the third time in eight games this season.
Baltimore unleashed 20 hits as every starter, with the exception of catcher Matt Wieters, had multiple hits. Wieters, however, still contributed to the offense, going 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI. Ryan Flaherty was the only Oriole starter without an RBI, but he did have three hits and scored two runs.
Baltimore starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen (1-1) got the win despite a lackluster outing. The left-hander was charged with four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in five frames.
Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 for the Yankees, who lost for just the second time in six outings. Alfonso Soriano added a homer and finished 2-for-4.
New York starter Ivan Nova (1-1) suffered the loss, getting knocked around for seven runs on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 inning. The right-hander struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
"I threw good curveballs (and) bad curveballs in the game. Good sinkers (and) bad sinkers," said Nova. "It was my consistency. Maybe my release point wasn't the same every time. It's something I have to work on."
The Orioles got going in the first inning when Chris Davis's sac fly plated Nick Markakis and Jones blasted a two-run homer for a 3-0 cushion.
The Yankees got a run back in the home half of the inning when Carlos Beltran doubled home Ellsbury, but Baltimore got that run back in the second when Flaherty scored from first on a Jonathan Schoop double.
Nova's struggles continued in the fourth as Baltimore got three more runs and knocked the starter from the game. Markakis drove in the first run of the frame with a bases-loaded sac fly. Young then singled home Flaherty to force Nova from the contest and Davis greeted Yankee reliever Cesar Cabral with an RBI single.
New York got three runs back in the fourth off Chen when Soriano homered, Yangervis Solarte, who finished 2-for-4, drove in a run with a double and Brian Roberts scored on Brett Gardner's ground out.
Baltimore put the game out of reach with a four-run sixth frame. Young smacked a two-run homer for the first runs of the inning. Davis later scored on a Matt Wieters sac fly and Nelson Cruz singled home Jones for an 11-4 cushion.
"It's always good to beat a divisional opponent," said Davis. "Early in the season (or) late in the season this was big for us."
Wieters blasted a two-run homer and Steve Lombardozzi added an RBI single in the eighth.
Lombardozzi had three hits.
Markakis and Davis each finished with two hits and two runs scored. Markakis had one RBI, while David drove in two runs.
Kelly Johnson hit a solo homer in the eighth for the Yankees to cap the scoring.
Prior to the game, the Yankees placed closer David Robertson on the 15-day DL with a groin strain ... Jones' HR was his first of the season ... Soriano's HR was his first and just the second of the year for the Yankees ... Young's HR was his first of the season ... Solarte had a pair of doubles and now has six doubles this season ... Wieters has an eight-game hitting streak. His HR was his second of the season ... Johnson's HR was his first of the season.
