Wedel, Yang, Conners, McCarthy on to U.S. Am semis
Johns Creek, GA (Sports Network) - Frederick Wedel, Gunn Yang, Corey Conners and Denny McCarthy all won their quarterfinal matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Wedel had the biggest victory against a tough opponent in Nathan Smith, a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion who was competing in his 14th U.S. Amateur. Wedel, No. 619 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, beat Smith, 4 & 3, to punch his ticket to the semifinals.
Yang, No. 776 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking who is playing in his first USGA championship at age 20, defeated Cameron Young, 2-up, on the Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Playing in his third U.S. Amateur and reaching his second straight quarterfinals, Conners took down Zachary Olsen, 2 & 1, to advance to the semifinals.
McCarthy, the highest ranked amateur in the quarterfinals at No. 36, won two of the final three holes to defeat Roman Robledo, 3 & 2.
Wedel came out of the gates strong against Smith by winning the first hole with a par. Wedel quickly took a 2-up lead with a birdie at No. 3, while Smith stumbled to a double-bogey.
Smith got back to 1-down with a birdie at No. 5, but he never got closer than that as Wedel widened his lead with a win on the par-3 seventh.
After the duo halved the next four holes, Wedel took control with birdies at 12 and 13 to take a 4-up lead with five holes to go. Wedel and Smith halved the next two holes to give Wedel a 4 & 3 victory.
Yang did not hold a lead over Young until late in the match. Young was 2-up through three holes, but Yang got things back to all-square with wins at four and five. Young took the lead back with a par at six, but again Yang had an answer with a birdie at seven.
Young and Yang went back-and-forth yet again, with Young winning No. 8 and Yang taking No. 9. After the two halved 10 and 11, Young took a 1-up lead with a birdie on 12.
Yang came up big down the stretch, however, squaring the match with a win at 14. He took his first lead with a birdie at 15, but Young came right back with a birdie at 16. Yang came back with two huge wins at 17 and 18 to advance with a 2-up win.
Conners held a 1-up lead throughout most of the match against Olsen, with Olsen squaring the match up briefly at No. 9. Conners took control from there with wins at 10 and 11. He was able to hold off Olsen from there.
Like Conners, McCarthy held the lead pretty much the whole time against Robledo. The two traded wins at one and two, but McCarthy won the next three to go 3-up. Robledo got no closer than 1-down, with McCarthy winning two of the final three holes to win 3 & 2.
Wedel will take on Yang, while Conners will play McCarthy on Saturday for the right to play in Sunday's 36-hole final.
