Smith edges Meth, advances to U.S. Amateur quarterfinals

Johns Creek, GA (Sports Network) - Nathan Smith outlasted Byron Meth in 21 holes on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship along with seven others.

Smith, a four-time winner of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, needed extra holes to oust Meth, this year's Amateur Public Links champion, in the third round. Smith also defeated Brandon McIver 4 & 3 in the second round earlier on Thursday.

Ollie Schniederjans, the top-ranked amateur in the world, was eliminated in the third round by Gunn Yang after a 1-down loss, while this year's Junior Amateur champion William Zalatoris fell to Zachary Olsen, 5 & 3, on the Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Cameron Young and Denny McCarthy escaped with 1-up victories, advancing to the quarterfinals. Young defeated Kyle Jones, while McCarthy won the last hole to outlast Eli Cole.

Canadian Corey Conners and Roman Robledo both picked up 3 & 1 wins, with Conners beating Jon Rahm and Robledo ousting Bryson DeChambeau. Frederick Wedel also advanced to the quarters with a 2 & 1 victory over Jimmy Mullen.

Meth held the early advantage when Smith bogeyed the first hole, giving Meth a 1-up lead. It was short-lived, however, as Meth bogeyed the second hole and the match was squared. Meth's 1-up lead after the first hole wound up being his only lead in the third round match.

Following four straight halved holes, Smith took his first lead with a birdie at the par-3 seventh. Both Smith and Meth parred the next four holes before another birdie for Smith at No. 12 gave him a 2-up advantage.

Meth got the match back to all-square by winning the next two holes. The duo traded blows for the next four holes with Smith winning 15 and 17, while Meth took 16 and 18 to force extra holes.

Smith and Meth halved the 19th and 20th holes, but Meth tripped to his second bogey in a row at 21. Smith rolled in his par to eliminate Meth and advance to the quarterfinals.

The U.S. Amateur continues with quarterfinal matches on Friday. The championship will wrap up with the 36-hole final on Sunday.
