Cindy Ha leads women's Public Links

DuPont, WA (Sports Network) - Cindy Ha posted a 5-under 67 on Monday and she leads the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship by one stroke.

Ha, a quarterfinalist last year, had seven birdies and two bogeys in her opening round at The Home Course.

Gabriella Then, the 2013 U.S. Girls' Junior champion, is one stroke off the lead at minus-4. Annie Park, the 2013 NCAA Individual champion, and Aram Choi are tied for third place at 3-under 69.

Soobin Kim, who is ranked in the top 50 in the World Women's Amateur Golf rankings, headlines a group of seven players tied at minus-2. She stands alongside Blair Lewis, Dominique Galloway, Maddie Szeryk, Katharine Patrick, Cassy Isagawa and Eun Jeong Seong.

Alice Kim, Kaci Masuda, T.J. Kliebphipat, Eimi Koga, Jacquelyn Eleey and 2013 U.S. Girls Junior runner-up Lakareber Abe are the final players in red figures at 1-under 71.

Last year's winner Lauren Diaz-Yi is tied for 18th place at even-par 72.

Ha, who was in the third group out off the first tee, birdied the first and third. She later birdied the sixth, but gave that shot back when she bogeyed the par-5 eighth.

Around the turn, Ha atoned for that mistake with a birdie on the 10th. She dropped another stroke on the 13th, but birdied 14 and 15. Ha closed with a birdie at the last to grab the early lead.

Then started on the back nine and posted her first birdie on No. 11. She grabbed the lead by running off five consecutive birdies from the 14th. On the front side, Then tripped to bogeys on the third and eighth to end one back.

The championship continues on Tuesday with the second round of stroke play. The match play portion of the championship starts on Wednesday and runs through Saturday's 36-hole final.
