Stasi ousted in U.S. Women's Mid-Am semis

Asheville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Meghan Stasi, who won this championship for a fourth time last year, lost on the 19th hole Wednesday at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

Stasi, who was 2-up on three separate occasions, lost the final three holes Wednesday as Margaret Shirley rallied to earn a spot in the finals.

Stroke-play medalist Julia Potter earned a 3 & 2 win over Stefi Markovich to gain the other spot in the finals at Biltmore Forest Country Club.

Stasi, a 35-year-old out of Florida, won the second and third with pars to quickly move 2-up. Shirley birdied the sixth to trim the deficit to 1-down. Stasi birdied the 10th and regained her 2-up lead.

Shirley, a 27-year-old from Georgia, birdied the 11th and 13th to square the match. Stasi claimed the 14th and 16th with pars, but Shirley parred the next two holes and that was good enough to send the match to a 19th hole. Stasi found water with her approach, and she conceded the hole and the match after missing her bogey effort.

Potter and Markovich battled back and forth over the first five holes before Potter took control. Markovich bogeyed the first, but Potter dropped a shot on the second to square things up.

At the third, Potter dropped a shot to fall 1-down. She won the fourth with a bogey and was conceded the fifth to move 1-up. Potter, a 25-year-old out Indiana, birdied the seventh to extend her lead to 2-up.

The pair halved the next eight holes. Markovich, a 38-year-old Canadian, double-bogeyed the 16th to lose the hole and the match.

Potter and Shirley will begin their 18-hole final at 9:00 a.m. (ET) on Thursday.
