Weather pushes Senior Amateur Championship back
Cashiers, NC (Sports Network) - First it was rain, then it was fog.
Foul weather on Wednesday caused changes to the schedule at the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.
The semifinals, which had been slated for Wednesday afternoon, have been pushed to Thursday morning, which in turn pushed the final match to Thursday afternoon.
Chip Lutz, the stroke-play medalist, and Doug Hanzel will battle in the first semifinal match Buzz Fly and Pat O'Donnell will also face off at Wade Hampton Golf Club.
Lutz, winner of the 2011 and 2012 British Senior and Canadian Senior Amateurs, cruised to a 4 & 3 win over Ray Thompson in the quarterfinals in a battle of Pennsylvanians. Hanzel, the low amateur at the last two U.S. Senior Opens, had the tightest match in the quarters as he fended off Don Erickson III, 3 & 1.
Fly rolled to a 5 & 3 victory over 2010 runner-up Patrick Tallent and O'Donnell claimed the last quarterfinal match 5 & 4 over David Szewczul.
