Lutz reaches Senior Amateur Championship quarterfinals

Cashiers, NC (Sports Network) - Stroke play medalist Chip Lutz continued to move forward on Tuesday, winning a pair of matches to reach the quarterfinals of the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Lutz dispatched Paul Schlachter, 5 & 4, in the round of 32, then took down Robert Valerio, 3 & 2, later Tuesday to earn a quarterfinal date with Ray Thompson, who needed 20 holes to oust Brady Exber in the round of 16.

Doug Hanzel, the U.S. Senior Open low amateur, earned a spot in the quarterfinals for the second straight year when he took down Mike Poe, 4 & 3, and Peter Wegmann, 7 & 5, on Tuesday. Hanzel will meet Don Erickson III in the quarters after the latter defeated Mike Booker, 2-up, in the round of 16.

Also advancing was Buzz Fly, who never trailed in a 3 & 2 victory over Edward Steiber. Fly secured a quarterfinal matchup against Patrick Tallent, who outlasted Jack Hall in a 19-hole marathon.

The final quarterfinal showdown will pit Pat O'Donnell against David Szewczul. O'Donnell took down defending champion Paul Simson, 3 & 2, earlier Tuesday, then posted a 2 & 1 win over Michael Turner. Szewczul, meanwhile, defeated George Zahringer, 2 & 1, in the round of 16 to stay alive.
