Lutz leads suspended Senior Amateur Championship

Cashiers, NC (Sports Network) - Chip Lutz carded a 3-under 69 on Saturday to grab the early lead at the USGA Senior Amateur Championship before the first round was suspended for inclement weather.

Buzz Fly and Jack Hall both managed an even-par 72 in the rainy conditions at Wade Hampton Golf Club to share second place, while defending champion Paul Simson and Rick Cloninger posted 1-over 73s to sit in a tie for fourth place.

George Zahringer owns sole possession of sixth at 2-over 74.

The entire morning wave was able to finish their opening rounds, but no one in the afternoon portion of the tournament's first day was able to complete their first round.

The 78 golfers left on the course will have to complete their rounds when play resumes at 7:50 a.m. ET Sunday. The second round is scheduled to start at 11:20 a.m.

Lutz, who has won a pair of British Senior Open Amateurs and also has two Canadian Senior Amateur titles, started on the back nine and followed four straight pars with a bogey at the 14th.

He got that stroke back with a birdie at the 17th to make the turn at even par, and then added gains at the first, fifth and eighth to post the lone score under par of the day.

"I am pretty pleased," said Lutz. "It was a tough day. It was really difficult. The wind was picking up and changing directions. We got a different volume of rain as we went. It would come on and then off."

Fly countered four birdies with four bogeys during his opening round, while Hall recorded three birdies and three bogeys to grab a share of second place.
