Fitzpatrick, Goss to meet in U.S. Amateur final
Brookline, MA (Sports Network) - Matt Fitzpatrick and Oliver Goss both won their respective semifinal matches Saturday to advance to the final at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Fitzpatrick, who was the low amateur at the 2013 British Open, downed Corey Conners, 2 & 1, while Goss topped Brady Watt, 2-up, at The Country Club.
Fitzpatrick and Conners traded pars over the first two holes before Fitzpatrick tripped to a bogey at the third to hand the Canadian a 1-up lead.
Conners moved to 2-up with a birdie at the fourth, but Fitzpatrick battled back with birdies at the sixth and eighth to square the match.
Fitzpatrick then claimed the lead with a birdie at the 10th before moving two clear of Conners with a birdie at the 13th. Conners would later birdie the 16th to cut into his deficit, but Fitzpatrick birdied the 17th to seal the victory.
Watt took the early advantage of his up-and-down match with a birdie at the first, but Goss responded with back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth to take a 1-up lead.
He then stretched his lead to two with another birdie at the seventh. Watt, however, was able to even the match with a birdie at the eighth and a par at the 10th.
Goss then birdied the 11th grab the lead for good and after the duo matched scores over the next six holes, Goss parred the 18th to claim the 2-up victory.
