Dahmen goes wire-to-wire to win Boreal Open
Fort McMurray, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Joel Dahmen entered Sunday's final round of the Syncrude Boreal Open with a 5-stroke lead, and he cruised to victory by that same margin.
Dahmen, who won for the second time this year on the PGA Tour Canada, shot a final round 69 to finish the tournament at 22-under-par 266, five shots clear of Ricky McDonald. Dahmen smashed the tournament scoring record of 271, which Cory Renfrew and Matt Hill set in 2012.
The 26-year-old American also won at the PC Financial Open earlier this year.
Dahmen played a relatively routine round, with no bogeys and three birdies, two of which came on the front nine. He began his round with four pars before pouring in a birdie at the par-5 fifth.
After three straight pars, Dahmen dropped in a birdie at the ninth and made the turn at 21-under. Three more pars and then a birdie at 13 had Dahmen in control. He finished things up with five straight pars and coasted to victory.
McDonald also played a flawless round with no bogeys, but the deficit was too much. McDonald made birdies at five, seven, 12, 15 and 18 to surpass Timothy Madigan for sole possession of second place.
After bogeying the first, Madigan had a strong stretch of birdies at Nos. 5, 7 and 8. He also made birdie at 10 to move him to 17-under, but a bogey at 17 dropped him below McDonald and into third place.
NOTES: Dahmen became the first wire-to-wire winner on the PGA Tour Canada since John Ellis did it in 2008 ... Christopher Wolfe fired the low round on Sunday with a 6-under 66. He finished tied for 25th and 9-under 279 ... The PGA Tour Canada will take next week off, but will resume in two weeks at the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
