Persons hangs on to win in British Columbia

Victoria, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Persons carded an even-par 70 on Sunday as he hung on for a 1-shot victory at the Bayview Place Island Savings Open.

Persons collected his first career victory on the PGA Tour Canada at 12-under- par 268.

Brock Mackenzie and Timothy Madigan shot matching 1-under 69s at Uplands Golf Club to share second place at 11-under 269, while Olin Browne, Jr. (67), Wes Homan (68), Michael Buttacavoli (68) and James Allenby (68) tied for fourth at minus-10.

T.J. Bordeaux (66), Robert Karlsson (68), Daniel Miernicki (69) and Garrett Sapp (71) shared eighth at 9-under 271.

Persons entered the final round with a 2-stroke lead, and quickly added to his advantage with a birdie at the third, moving him to 13-under.

Mackenzie answered with a birdie at the seventh to pull back within two, but Persons also birdied the seventh to maintain his 3-shot lead.

Persons would then record bogeys at the 11th and 13th around a birdie at the 13th to fall back to 13-under and cut his lead to just one.

But Madigan, who had reached minus-12 with birdies at the ninth and 12th, bogeyed the 14th to hand Persons back his 2-stroke advantage.

Persons was able to hang on for the victory despite another bogey at the 16th with a pair of closing pars.

Mackenzie, meanwhile, followed his birdie at the seventh with a bogey at the 10th and a birdie at the 18th amid nine pars to earn his share of second place.

NOTES: Persons collected $27,000 with the victory ... Stephen Gangluff, who won this title last season, finished in a tie for 23rd place at 5-under 275 ... The tour has off next week before returning for the The Syncrude Boreal Open, which Riley Wheeldon won last season.
