Hubbard wins by 2 in Ontario
Peterborough, ON (Sports Network) - Mark Hubbard posted a 5-under 66 on Sunday and won the Wildfire Invitational by two shots over two players.
Hubbard, who earned his first victory on the PGA Tour Canada, ended at 20- under-par 264 at Wildfire Golf Club.
Kyle Stough (66) and Mackenzie Hughes (67) shared second place at minus-18. Jorge Fernandez-Valdes ended alone in fourth at 17-under-par 267
Nick Taylor took fifth at minus-16 after a final-round 68. David Skinns (69), Cory Renfrew (69) and Brady Schnell (64) tied for sixth place at 15-under 269.
Hubbard, who had just one top-10 finish this year, got off to a quick start with back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth to move to 17-under.
The 24-year-old American birdied the par-5 eighth and the 10th. After five pars in a row, Hubbard birdied the 16th from 15 feet out. He parred the final two holes to seal the win.
"I had to be in the moment and really had to focus on each shot, so the whole thing hasn't really kicked in yet. The putt on 16 was one of the best putts I've ever hit in my life," Hubbard admitted. "I had two or three up-and-downs that were some of the best of my life. That one on 15 was probably the shot of my life. I put a lot of work in the last two weeks and it's nice to see it pay off."
NOTES: Hubbard earned $27,000 for the win ... Hughes was the low Canadian for the second straight week ... The tour heads to Nova Scotia next week for the Cape Breton Celtic Classic, which is a new event on the PGA Tour Canada schedule.
