Campbell, Sainz share lead at Players Cup

Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Peter Campbell and Carlos Sainz, Jr. fired matching 7-under 65s on Thursday to share the lead at the end of the first round of the Players Cup.

Doug McGuigan and Mackenzie Hughes sit a shot back at Pine Ridge Golf Club at 6-under, while Dakota Dunes Open winner Wil Collins shares fifth place with Kyle Stough, Sean Shahi, Eugene Wong and Darren Wallace at 5-under 67.

Cory Renfrew, who currently ranks ninth on the PGA Tour Canada's money list, sits among a large group of players tied for 10th at 4-under.

Sainz went out off the first tee and raced out of the gate with three straight birdies from the second. He picked up another shot at the eighth to make the turn at 4-under.

He then capped his bogey-free round with gains at the 13th, 16th and 17th to grab a share of the lead.

"Today, all the putts dropped, and that's what yields good scores," said Sainz. "It felt really good to give myself some opportunities and capitalize for a good round today."

Campbell started earlier on the 10th tee with the morning wave and parred his first two holes before getting into red numbers with a birdie at the 12th.

After trading a birdie at the 14th with a bogey at the 18th, the Canadian reeled off six birdies in a seven-hole stretch from the second to highlight his inward 31 and grab the clubhouse lead before Sainz joined him later in the day.

NOTES: Josh Persons was within a shot of the lead entering the par-4 18th hole, but posted a quadruple-bogey 8 to fall to minus-2 and into a share of 31st place ... Defending champion Chris Killmer opened with a 1-under 71 and is tied for 44th place.
