Taylor moves ahead by 1 at Dakota Dunes Open
Saskatoon, SK (Sports Network) - Nick Taylor fired a 5-under 67 on Saturday and grabbed a 1-stroke lead entering the final round of the Dakota Dunes Open.
Taylor endured a four-hour delay due to dangerous weather, then posted six birdies against a lone bogey at Dakota Dunes Golf Links to move in front at 19-under-par 197 through 54 holes. The 25-year-old, who is seeking his first PGA Tour Canada win, tied for fourth at the Times Colonist Island Savings Open in June.
Overnight leader Jaco Ahlers shot 2-under 70 and dropped into second place at 18-under. The South African is also aiming for his first win on the circuit.
Ahlers' countryman, Doug McGuigan, carded a 71 and fell into a tie for third at 15-under. He is joined there by Americans Dan Buchner (67), John Ellis (68) and Wil Collins (70).
Canadian Ryan Yip (66), George Bradford (68) and Joshua Creel (69) are tied for seventh at minus-14.
Taylor, who has six career top-10 finishes in 18 starts on PGA Tour Canada, was even-par through nine holes on Saturday while Buchner charged up the leaderboard.
Buchner went out in 32, picking up a hat trick of birdies from the second and adding another at the ninth to reach 14-under.
Around the turn he charged, adding gains at Nos. 11 and 12 to reach 16-under and grab the outright lead.
Ahlers was in the midst of a tough opening stretch in which he followed a birdie at the second with bogeys at Nos. 6 and 9, but Taylor was just hitting his stride.
He birdied the 10th and 13th to catch Buchner at 16-under, then closed in style, grabbing the lead with a birdie at the 15th and adding gains at Nos. 16 and 18 to end Saturday's action on top.
Buchner slowed with five straight pars from the 13th and a bogey at the last to fall off the pace, but Ahlers righted himself. He played his inward nine at 3-under to move within a shot of the lead.
NOTES: Taylor won five straight Vancouver Golf Tour events earlier this season ... Jae-Woo Im carded a hole-in-one at the par-3 15th ... Friday's 6-under cut line tied a PGA Tour Canada record, matching the lowest cut line since the 2008 ATB Financial Classic.
