Union extends Bennett through 2022
Schenectady, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Union College on Thursday announced a contract extension for men's hockey head coach Rick Bennett through 2022.
Bennett guided the Dutchmen to their first-ever Division I championship thanks to a 7-4 decision over Minnesota on April 12 in the Frozen Four final. That was the capper on a memorable campaign, which saw Union go 32-6-4, win the ECAC regular-season and playoff titles, and enter the NCAA tourney as the No. 1 program in the country.
"I could not be prouder of the accomplishments of this team both on and off the ice under Rick's leadership along with his staff," Union athletic director Jim McLaughlin said. "The success on the ice throughout his tenure has been remarkable and the student-athletes' achievements in the classroom and within the community have been equally impressive. His leadership goes far beyond the rink and we are very fortunate to have him at Union leading this program."
Since taking over prior to the 2011-12 season, Bennett has posted an 80-27-16 mark along with an impressive 19-2 postseason record.
The 46-year-old Providence product and former Minnesota North Stars draft pick was also recognized with the Spencer Penrose Award, honoring the top coach in D-I by the American Hockey Coaches Association.
