GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans will go for the season sweep of the Wofford Terriers, as the two teams are set for a Southern Conference clash at Johnson Arena.
UNCG cruised to a 71-52 win over Wofford when these teams met up in Greensboro on Jan. 16. Still, the Terriers lead the all-time series, 20-10.
While the Spartans won handily in the first meeting, they have struggled mightily on the road this season with only one win in 10 tries. However, that lone victory came this past Thursday at Furman in a lopsided 88-65 final. After wrapping up a three-game road trip tonight, UNCG will return to campus to host a pair of games next week.
Meanwhile, Wofford is coming off a much needed 60-50 win over Elon on Thursday. Prior to that outcome, the Terriers had lost three in a row and six of seven. On the docket for the Terriers next week are two road games with Western Carolina and Samford.
UNCG coach Wes Miller could not find much to complain about following Thursday's victory. After all, his squad shot 60 percent from the floor and 60 percent from 3-point range (9-of-15) en route to a season-high 88 points. The Spartans also held a 42-29 rebounding advantage while holding Furman to 35.6- percent shooting for the game. Trevis Simpson racked up 29 points in 29 minutes of floor time, as he shot 10-of-18 from the floor and 3-of-6 from long range. Kayel Locke, Derrell Armstrong and Nicholas Paulos each finished with 11 points in the victory. Simpson has been one of the most dynamic scorers in the nation this season, and he leads the SoCon with 20.2 points per game. He is a 37-percent shooter from beyond the arc and also averages 4.1 rebounds. Armstrong (14.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Locke (10.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg) are also scoring in double figures.
Karl Cochran paces Wofford with 15.3 ppg, followed by Spencer Collins with 12.4 ppg. That duo has combined to knock down 88 3-pointers on the season, but they are only a collective 32 percent. Down low, Lee Skinner is averaging 10.5 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds, although he is shooting a rather pedestrian 41.4-percent from the floor. This past Thursday, the Terriers pulled away from Elon by shooting 52.2 percent from the floor in the second half and knocking down 14-of-17 free throws. Defensively, they limited the Phoenix to 37.3-percent shooting for the game and held a key 21-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Collins led the way with a team-high 16 points, while Cochran scored 13, and Skinner finished with 10.
The Spartans won handily in the first meeting, and they certainly gained some confidence on the road with Thursday's big win over Furman. The Terriers won't go down without a fight, but they'll have their hands full trying to contain Simpson who is scoring in bunches.
