GAME NOTES: The Citadel Bulldogs will try once again to notch their first road win of the season, as they visit the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Wednesday night.
The Citadel has lost four in a row entering the contest. The Bulldogs are playing the fourth leg of a season-long, six-game road swing, and the first three games of the trip have all resulted in double-digit losses. Most recently, they were dealt a 71-58 setback at Gardner-Webb over the weekend.
St. Bonaventure is off to a 3-1 start in the month of December, and the team is coming off Saturday's 87-53 rout over Cleveland State. The 34-point win marked the Bonnies' largest margin of victory since a 44-point differential over Fordham last season. The Bonnies have won all four of their home games so far this season.
This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs, and it's only the fourth time the Bulldogs are venturing into the state of New York for a game in their history.
The Citadel outrebounded Gardner-Webb on Saturday, 43-31. However, the Bulldogs shot just 34.5 percent from the floor in addition to committing 20 turnovers. After claiming a three-point halftime lead, the Bulldogs allowed GW to pull away by shooting 61.3 percent in the second stanza, which included a key 11-2 run. Dylen Setzekorn led the way with 16 points in the loss, while Mike Groselle finished with 14 points and 15 boards, including nine on the offensive glass. It was the 25th career double-double for Groselle, but as has often been the case during his tenure, he simply did not get much help from his teammates. On the season, he is shooting 57.6 percent from the floor while averaging a team-best 16.1 points and 8.6 rebounds. Matt Van Scyoc is the only other Citadel player in double figures, averaging 10.5 ppg.
Chris Johnson leads St. Bonaventure with 14.2 ppg, followed by Demitrius Conger with 13.9 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per contest. Eric Mosley, at 9.2 ppg, is one of four other Bonnies tallying at least 7.6 points per outing. Johnson, Conger and Mosley can all shoot from outside, as they have combined to knock down 42-of-101 (.416). However, the Bonnies have also allowed their opponents to shoot at an equally successful rate from outside, as they are tallying 6.6 treys per game and giving up 6.7. Still, the team is coming off a season-high 87-point outburst against Cleveland State and figures to bring plenty of confidence into this matchup. The Bonnies also shot a season-best 54 percent from the floor. Conger recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as 11 of the 12 Bonnies who saw court time reached the scoring column.
These teams appear to be headed in opposite directions at the moment. The Bonnies will no doubt give lots of attention to Groselle in the paint, forcing his teammates to step up.
