=== Minor league umpires end strike ===
St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Minor League Baseball umpires have ended
their season-long strike, agreeing to a new six-year contract that includes a
salary increase of $100 per month.
The umpires had been on strike since the start of the season on April 6, but
are now expected to return by June 12.
"We are happy to have reached a deal that will assure labor peace with our
umpires through the 2011 season," said Minor League Baseball vice president
Pat O'Conner in a release. "We look forward to continuing another great season
of baseball without the distraction of a strike."
Minor League Baseball had been progressing this season with replacement
umpires.
The new deal also increases the per diem for umpires in each year of the
agreement, starting with a $3 per day -- or $90 per month -- raise this year.
