NBA Game Summary - New York at Philadelphia
(Saturday, January 11th)
Final Score: New York 102, Philadelphia 92
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Amar'e Stoudemire had 21 points in the New York Knicks' 102-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.
Carmelo Anthony added 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Knicks, who have won four in a row.
New York guard J.R. Smith tallied 14 points and six assists in his return to the lineup. Smith was fined $50,000 by the NBA Wednesday for recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct. Against the Heat on Thursday, the big story wasn't so much the 102-92 victory, as much as head coach Mike Woodson's decision to bench a healthy Smith for the entire game.
"I just wanted to be aggressive, attack, get back to my old self, play with a chip on my shoulder and it worked," Smith said. "It was very important for me as well as the team to get out there and be successful with scoring the ball and getting my teammates open shots."
Spencer Hawes and James Anderson each had 17 points for the Sixers, who have dropped four straight since a four-game winning streak. Thaddeus Young and Evan Turner donated 15 and 12 points, respectively.
It was all Knicks after the Sixers took a 28-20 lead into the second quarter.
Trailing 34-27, New York went on a 25-6 run to close out the first half. Smith, who was on the bench for the entire first quarter, scored 11 points during the surge. Iman Shumpert's 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining made it a 52-40 contest.
The Knicks scored 32 more points in the third stanza, which started and ended with a pair of 4-0 spurts by the visitors. New York shot 65 percent from the field and took an 84-68 margin into the fourth.
Philadelphia never got closer than eight in the final period.
"It was a snowball effort. We didn't put out the fire early enough," Hawes said.
The Knicks have won eight of the last 10 against Philadelphia ... New York center Tyson Chandler missed his third straight game Saturday due to an upper respiratory illness ... Tony Wroten and Michael Carter-Williams each had 11 points for the 76ers.
