Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Toronto scored 33 unanswered points in the
second half as the Argonauts claimed a thrilling 34-22 win over the Edmonton
Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium.
Toronto (9-4) had just a single point at intermission and trailed 22-1 in the
third quarter before mounting the comeback bid, the team's fourth straight
With the win the Argonauts, who are 9-0 this season when scoring at least 30
points, secured a playoff berth for the second consecutive year.
Toronto running back Chad Kackert scored a pair of touchdowns for the
visitors, accounting for 155 yards on the ground. Quarterback Zach Collaros
threw for just 152 yards and a major on 17-of-32, while Marcus Ball returned
an interception 57 yards for a score in the final minute to put the game out
The Eskimos (3-10), who had won two straight coming into Week 14 action, saw
starting quarterback Mike Reilly exit in the second quarter with concussion-
like symptoms and did not return. Reilly did have one passing score before
Backup signal-caller Kerry Joseph completed 13-of-26 for 197 yards and a
touchdown to Fred Stamps, adding a three-yard rushing touchdown in the third
period as well. Stamps, playing in his 100th career game, registered his 10th
receiving TD of the season and also crossed the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth
Edmonton scored the first point of the night on a single by Grant Shaw. Swayze
Waters countered for the Argos with a single of his own later in the first
frame, but after that it appeared as though the Eskimos were going to run away
with the decision.
Reilly hit Shamawd Chambers with a 17-yard TD pass late in the first period,
while the only points of the second came on a six-yard TD reception by Stamps
The Esks added to what had been a 15-1 halftime advantage with a three-yard
major on the ground by Joseph to make the score 22-1.
From there, Toronto took over as Waters knocked through a 50-yard field goal,
Kackert hit the end zone on a 49-yard run and Collaros combined with Dontrelle
Inman on a 10-yard TD pass play early in the fourth. Collaros then tossed a
two-point conversion to John Chiles to cut the Toronto deficit to 22-19.
A single by Waters drew the visitors to within two points, while Kackert's
recovery of a Collaros fumble in the end zone proved to be the game-winner,
with Ball's late return capping a monumental collapse by Edmonton in front of
the hometown crowd.
Pat Watkins picked off two passes and recovered a fumble for the Argonauts and
now leads the league with five interceptions on the season...Marcus Howard
logged three sacks for the Eskimos and now has nine sacks on the
campaign...Toronto has won a franchise record six road games this season,
setting a CFL record with a fourth win away from home in consecutive
weeks...Edmonton was flagged 14 times for 104 yards
