Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Kerry Joseph passed for 280 yards and three
touchdowns and Hugh Charles rushed for 152 yards and a score as the Edmonton
Eskimos defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 37-20.
Joseph completed 19-of-29 passes for 280 yards and did not throw an
interception for Edmonton (7-8), which has won back-to-back games following a
five-game losing streak. Nate Coehoorn led the Eskimos with 77 receiving yards
and also caught a touchdown pass.
For Saskatchewan (8-7), Darian Durant completed 17-of-27 passes for 204 yards
with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Kory Sheets had 12 rushes for 77
yards, while Taj Smith led all receivers with six catches for 98 yards. The
loss for the Roughriders snaps a three-game winning streak.
Saskatchewan scored the game's first points midway through the opening quarter
when Durant connected with Weston Dressler for a two-yard major, but the
Eskimos answered later in the frame with a 22-yard scoring strike from Joseph
to Fred Stamp to tie the game up at 7-7.
Edmonton took its first lead of the game, 10-7, early in the second quarter
following a 30-yard field goal off the foot of Grant Shaw. After an
interception of Durant set the Eskimos up with a short field, they drove forty
yards in four plays, capping the drive off with a three-yard scoring strike
from Joseph to Kerry Koch to extended their advantage to 17-7.
Grant Shaw added a 35-yard field goal later in the second quarter. The
Roughriders responded with a 28-yard field goal from Sandro DeAngelis to make
the score 20-10 in favor of Edmonton at the half.
Edmonton added to its advantage on the first drive of the second half following
a 27-yard touchdown run from Charles. A long pass interference penalty by
Saskatchewan on the drive set the Eskimos up in great field position.
The Eskimos continued to pile on later in the third quarter as Joseph hooked up
with Coehoorn for a 10-yard major to give them a 34-10 lead.
The Roughriders halted Edmonton's run late in the third quarter when Durant
tossed a three-yard scoring strike to Scott McHenry. Following a successful
two-point conversion, Saskatchewan's deficit was two scores, 34-18.
Another Shaw field goal in the fourth quarter, this time from 19-yards out,
helped put the game out of reach for Edmonton.
Dressler has a league-leading 11 receiving touchdowns on the year for the
Roughriders...With two interceptions, the Eskimos have now created at least two
turnovers in 11 games this season..Edmonton defensive back Joe Burnett recorded
his six interception, which leads the league...This marked the sixth straight
loss for Saskatchewan in Edmonton...The Eskimos are 69-29-2 in Edmonton in the
all-time series over the Roughriders.
