Shaw secures United switch
Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester United confirmed the signing of defender Luke Shaw on Friday on a four-year contract with the option of a further year.
The 18-year-old arrives at Old Trafford from Southampton for a fee believed to be in the region of $50 million, and he is the second significant addition in two days for the Red Devils after the club added midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.
Shaw has already appeared in 60 Premier League games after coming up through the youth system at Southampton, and he joins a United side that is coming off a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Premier League last term.
"I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that," Shaw said. "I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club."
Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal will take charge of United once the Dutch are eliminated from the World Cup, and after a slow start to transfer business, the club has now secured two big signings in two days.
Shaw's exit from Southampton continues a worrying trend for the Saints, who have already seen manager Mauricio Pochettino and striker Rickie Lambert leave the club since the end of last season.
