Cruzeiro jumps into top spot with Flamengo defeat
Sao Paulo, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Defending champions Cruzeiro moved back into first place on Sunday after earning a comfortable 3-0 victory over Flamengo at the Estadio Mineirao.
After suffering a 1-0 defeat against Corinthains last week, Cruzeiro bounced back nicely through goals from Borges, Everton and Ricardo Goulart to climb back into first place with 19 points, three clear of the next four clubs.
The hosts got off the mark after just 16 minutes when Goulart fired home and Everton doubled his team's advantage with a tally just two minutes later.
Cruzeiro put the result away in first-half stoppage time when Borges found the back of the net.
Flamengo rarely threatened the Cruzeiro net in the second half and managed just one strike on target as the club remains in 19th place with just seven points on the season.
Elsewhere in Brazil on Sunday, Chapecoense earned a 2-1 victory over Bahia courtesy of goals from Abuda and Alemao, while Jadson and Edlilson traded goals as Corinthians and Botafogo played to a 1-1 draw.
Newly-promoted Palmeiras earned a valuable point away from home with a scoreless draw against Gremio.
Douglas Coutinho netted a hat trick for Atletico PR in a comfortable 3-1 result over Figueirense, while Jorge Henrique and Jean traded goals in a 1-1 stalemate between Fluminense and Internacional.
Sunday's final fixture saw Gabriel and Diego Nogueira score for Santos in a 2-0 victory over Criciuma.
On Saturday, Alex, Kerrison and Assuncao Dener all netted first-half goals for Cortibia in a 3-0 rout of Goias, while Luis Fabiano and Dorlan Pabon netted for Sao Paulo in a 2-1 win over Atletico Mineiro.
Saturday's final match saw Neto Baiano score the only goal to lift Sport Recife to a 1-0 result over Vitoria.
