Poyet signs Sunderland extension

Sunderland, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Sunderland manager Gus Poyet put pen to paper on a contract extension Wednesday that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2016.

Poyet took the reins in October 2013 following the dismissal of former manager Paolo Di Canio, who led the club to just one victory prior to his removal.

Sunderland was at the bottom of the table on Christmas Day and looked destined to be relegated, but Poyet authored an unbelievable survival story in the final months of the season.

The Black Cats earned an unlikely point in a 2-2 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on April 16 then stunned Chelsea, 2-1, at Stamford Bridge three days later.

As the calendar turned to May, Sunderland claimed a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford and followed it up with a 2-0 result over West Bromwich Albion on May 7 to secure another season in the Premier League.

"I am delighted to extend my stay with Sunderland AFC, after an unbelievable season and our famous great escape," Poyet said. "Stability is absolutely key to long-term and sustained success for any football club, and this new contract gives both the club and me that stability going forward.

"Now it's a different challenge for me and the club and I am relishing the next stage with Sunderland. We achieved so much last season, working together - the club and the fans - and we took many good memories from the season."
